The Car

The Heaven & Hell car is a 1970 Camaro RS, purchased by Carla in 1990 as her daily driver.

Tired of racing against Rick on the motorway and collecting points on her licence, Carla decided to extend the Run-What-You-Brung experience with some real racing, and started racing in competition in 1993, when she received the "Rookie of the Year" award from the Santa Pod Racers Club, and she ended the 1993 season in third place in the National Championship and second place in the Santa Pod Divisional Championship.

The car was modified and upgraded over the years, initially with work, help and advice from various friends and increasingly by Rick and Carla themselves - who now do all of the work, including engine, transmission, axle and chassis modifications - stopping short of body work and paint, for which we have to give credit to Bob Doyle who built the fibreglass front and Andy Stroud of Hairy Designs who did the great airbrush graphics.

The car now weighs 3000 lbs. with driver, has run a best ET of 9.71 and best top speed of 138 mph, using a normally aspirated 434ci small block built by the H & H team (with parts, machining and advice from John Gianoli of GIANOLI MOTORSPORTS and dynoed by Kenny Coleman of EDA, who also provided help and advice).

Talking of John Gianoli, the man is a genius. The small block built with his specification and his advice has gone from strength to strength and has proved to be better than our wildest dreams. And we will forever bear in mind his motto:

"REMEMBER: RACING BEFORE FAMILY"

Power to the rear is transmitted via a TH350 with B&M Manualpack, heavy duty sprag and no transbrake. This is also built, modified and maintained entirely by Heaven & Hell.

Back axle is a Chevy 10 bolt containing a spool with 4.56 gears, which has proved so far very durable - proving that yes, everything you read in Hot Rod is true (!!). And yes, you guessed right, the axle is also built, modified and maintained by the team.

No ladder bars or 4 link for Heaven & Hell: the car uses mono leaf springs and Caltracs to leave the line, with a best 60ft of 1.29 so far. Leaving the line like a Super Stocker is a dream come true for us, and the biggest wheelie so far also gave us the quickest 60' proving that you ARE going forward when you are going UP!

A lot should be said for the class, on how it has grown and improved and become extremely competitive, with more and more racers being drawn to it from other classes.
